This is Inner Wisdom's (IWF) pilot project in Honduras. Help Inner Wisdom construct its first energy independent school in Sula, Honduras! In addtion to the building program, there are volunteer opportunites to provide elementary education once the school is complete. Both programs provide an opportunity to experience Honduran life first-hand while working with the local population to improve the conditions of the impoverished community.

Village Building Program:

This program focuses exclusively on the construction of energy independent schools and support structures that will be used for K-12 bilingual education during the day and adult education at night. Prior to placement please inform us of any construction skills you can bring to the project so we can place you on the appropriate team.

Construction placements are appropriate for volunteers with energy to build sustainable structures that provide valuable resources to the communities that access them and enthusiasm for grassroots development.

Volunteers will be asked to help with general construction, bricklaying, framing, carpentry, solar power installation, lighting and outlet installation, plumbing, painting, flooring, water collection, solar water heating installation, solar cooking education and development, public outreach, composting education, and computer networking.

Volunteers will have the opportunity for discussions with community members and are encouraged to practice their Spanish within the community.

Accommodations and daily meals will be provided within Sula and no more than 4 volunteers will be placed in any accommodation.

Generally these placements are for one week (Allow extra time for travel and cultural acclimation), but longer volunteer periods can be arranged.

Honduran schools celebrate several special events during the year: Parents Day, Grandparents Day, 100 Days, field trips and Kindergarten graduation. Our active Parents Association also plans several trips for the entire family to enjoy during the year.

Teaching placements are appropriate for volunteers with strong teaching skills and enthusiasm for grassroots development.

Volunteers will be asked to help with administrative work such as budgeting, updating paperwork, and maintaining personal files on the elementary students. (Please note: if there is a significant language barrier between volunteers and the local population, local translators will help you with translation.)

This is a challenging but amazing program for volunteers with an education background such as public and private K-12 school teachers, college professors, college students, and people who want to share their time and talent.

Accommodations and daily meals will be provided within Sula, and will range from private accommodations in the teacher quarters to rooms in a host family home.
